On Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, Belgium commemorated the first anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack at Sainctelette Square, which claimed the lives of two Swedish citizens and left a third seriously injured.
An official ceremony was organized by Belgian authorities, attended by key figures such as the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, along with the Minister of Justice, Paul Van Tigchelt, the Minister of Home Affairs, Annelies Verlinden, and the Federal Prosecutor, Ann Fransen. Other notable attendees included the Mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, and the Chief of the Brussels Capital/Ixelles police zone, Michel Goovaerts.
Swedish authorities were also present, with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson among them. In the presence of survivors and the families of those who lost their lives, the ceremony included a musical performance, a minute of silence, and a flower wreath-laying.
V-Europe, a victims' support organization, participated in the ceremony by laying a wreath of flowers to pay tribute to those affected by the attack, honor their memory, and support the survivors in their ongoing recovery.
