Summary of Civil Claims Procedure
After the lengthy Assize trial, the focus now shifts to civil claims against the convicted individuals. The Brussels Court of Assizes will hold sessions on the following dates:
- April 16th, 2 p.m.
- April 17th, 2 p.m.
- April 18th, 2 p.m.
- April 22nd, 2 p.m.
- April 23rd, 2 p.m. (reserve day)
Attendance by the convicted is not mandatory, and civil parties are encouraged but not required to attend as V-Europe will represent their interests. Each participant has submitted claims for damages, prepared by V-Europe.
The Court will issue rulings on compensation in the coming months. Hervé BAYINGANA intends to contest his liability, which V-Europe has countered. The Court can award the requested compensation but not more.
Payments will likely be sought from victim support funds, as the convicted parties are insolvent. This phase is crucial, marking the culmination of the criminal case after many years. The V-Europe team remains available for support.
